Bangladesh Monsoon Disaster Kills 51, Over a Million Affected by Floods

Excessive monsoon rains in Bangladesh have claimed the lives of 51 people, impacting more than a million people, with flooding, landslides, and serious waterlogging affecting significant parts of the country, including Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. About half of the total deaths recorded were from the Cox’s Bazar district, which is known to house the world’s largest Rohingya refugee camp, with sad instances like floodwater inundating a school building and killing a few students and a teacher there. As an effort to counter the increasing rain showers, which have been pointed out to be intensified by climate change, the government is working on evacuating some of the most vulnerable areas, putting off student examinations, and establishing state shelters for thousands of displaced individuals. However, while weather experts predict that conditions in the southeastern part of the nation will soon get better, they are warning of potential floods in the north and northeast due to the monsoon.
